Made as a birthday gift for my friend Joe. Single slab of mulberry. Linseed oil and polyurethane.


This project presented a technical challenge of planing a large piece of wood. In the absence of a wide drum sander or spare $3500 to buy one, I had to research ways of making a thoroughly twisted and well cupped 3’x6′ piece of wood flat. As usual, collective wisdom of internet came up with a simple and elegant solution for me: a router carriage jig.


Above only shows rails, on top of which the jig rides with a router equipped with a monstrous 2.5″ flat bit.

In the end I decided to leave some saw marks from the initial slabbing on the piece as a character accent:
