There is an ancient Greek myth about the young nymph Amaryllis and the gardener Alteo. In that myth Amaryllis falls in love with Alteo, but he is interested only in the flowers. To gain his attention, young Amaryllis goes through an extreme act of piercing her own heart every night for 30 nights with a golden arrow to create a new and beautiful flower to entice Alteo.
\nI made this pendant depicting an amaryllis flower on a black night-like background, with sparkles symbolizing stars that serve as a backdrop for Amaryllis\u2019s nightly sacrifice. A twisted cane torsade frames the flower to hint at the Ouroboros \u2013 the snake that eats its own tail, which symbolizes wholeness or completion, the very state the nymph Amaryllis is seeking with her sacrifices. <\/p>\n
