Description

There is an ancient Greek myth about the young nymph Amaryllis and the gardener Alteo. In that myth Amaryllis falls in love with Alteo, but he is interested only in the flowers. To gain his attention, young Amaryllis goes through an extreme act of piercing her own heart every night for 30 nights with a golden arrow to create a new and beautiful flower to entice Alteo.
I made this pendant depicting an amaryllis flower on a black night-like background, with sparkles symbolizing stars that serve as a backdrop for Amaryllis’s nightly sacrifice. A twisted cane torsade frames the flower to hint at the Ouroboros – the snake that eats its own tail, which symbolizes wholeness or completion, the very state the nymph Amaryllis is seeking with her sacrifices.

Life like 3-D Orange-red amaryllis lily with green leaves on a black background with sparkly goldstone (aventurine) inclusions. Framed in a twisted cane torsade and matching twisted cane bail. Has artist’s 3-letter signature murrini on the back.
